Backward vertical integration has been the cornerstone of the evolution and growth of Reliance. Starting with textiles in the late seventies, Reliance pursued a strategy of backward vertical integration - in polyester, fibre intermediates, plastics, petrochemicals, petroleum refining and oil and gas exploration and production - to be fully integrated along the materials and energy value chain.
The Group's activities span exploration and production of oil and gas, petroleum refining and marketing, petrochemicals (polyester, fibre intermediates, plastics and chemicals), textiles, retail, broadband services, financial services and special economic zones.
Reliance enjoys global leadership in its businesses, being the largest polyester yarn and fibre producer in the world and among the top five to ten producers in the world in major petrochemical products.
In September 2008, just over two years of its discovery, Reliance commenced production in its KG-D6 block off East Coast of India with sweet crude of 42 API making it the world's fastest green-field deepwater oil development project. In April 2009, it commenced gas production from India’s first deep water production facility significantly impacting key sectors including fertilizer and power as also reducing foreign exchange and subsidy burden.
Reliance operates two of the world’s largest and most complex refineries. With 1.24 million barrels per day (MBPD) of crude processing capacity, RIL is the largest refiner at any single location in the world.
In line with its commitment to sustainability and growth RIL works closely with the communities where it operates especially on social, environmental and economic issues. RIL complies with several international benchmarks and voluntary guidelines including those set by International Petroleum Industry Environmental Conservation Association (IPIECA), United Nations Global Compact (UNGC) and World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD). In keeping with the standards it sets for itself RIL Corporate Sustainability Report has been consistently awarded A+ for the last five time by the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI).
